I have always thought that we sing the wrong stanza for our National Anthem. For decades, we have sung the first of four verses of the song. In the first verse, the question is raised, does the flag still wave? I believe we should sing the last verse, and I show it here for your observation.

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

This stanza is much more positive and, I believe it better reflects what we should be singing if we are to progress from where we are. Otherwise, we will continue to decline, both as a Nation and as a World Leader.
Just an opinion, but think of the power of the words. For decades, the citizens of this country have been asking whether the flag still waves "o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave." Compare that to the last 2 lines in the verse above. There is no doubt it does wave and "in triumph".
